Brokenness Brings God’s Presence

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm  34:18

Two verses prior, in verse 16, it says that the face of God is against those that do evil. But now God doesn’t say He’s against, He says He is nigh (near). God is near those that are of a broken heart. Whether the brokenness is by choice (repentance of heart) or by circumstances of life, the promise is clear that God is near those that are broken. May my heart be broken so that God can build it according to His image. Brokenness might hurt, but God being near is the greatest thing that can ever happen!

  1. Brokenness serves as a reminder of our need for God. When life is going well (financially secure, healthy, and with happy children), we might proceed without seeking God’s guidance. However, during challenging times, we are more likely to turn to Him. Difficult times remind us of our dependence on God.
  1. Brokenness is a time of forming by God. Although these times are unwelcome, they impart lessons that would otherwise remain unlearned. God is molding you into His likeness. He does not break His children out of hostility but out of love, wanting the best for them.
  1. Brokenness fosters humility, which invites God’s grace. The Bible repeatedly states that God opposes the proud (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5) and despises pride (Proverbs 6:16-17). Conversely, He bestows grace upon the humble (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5).
