Hard Is Not the Same as a Closed Door (Part 4)

Part 4 of a seven-part series on Seeing the Harvest — Adversity, Joy, and the Reward of Faithful Ministry - This is a series is taken from a Missions Class at Vision School of Missions led by Missionary Dallas Brown. The book by Don Mingo, "The Cross-Cultural Worker's Spiritual Survival Guide 14 Tips to Help You Thrive in Your Calling," was used as textbook and resource material for discussion.

One of the most subtle dangers in ministry is mistaking difficulty for divine redirection.

Scripture and experience teach us this principle clearly:
Hard does not equal closed.

Proverbs 26 describes a man who refuses to act because he claims there is a lion in the street. The Bible does not call him cautious—it calls him slothful. The danger is real, but his response reveals fear, not wisdom.

Opposition is expected. Pushback is normal. Resistance is not proof that God has closed a door. Often, it simply means the work matters.

True closed doors leave no faithful options remaining. Until then, perseverance is not stubbornness—it is obedience.

Discerning God’s leading requires asking:

  • Is this difficulty pushing me toward obedience or away from it?
  • Am I being directed—or merely discouraged?
  • Have I truly exhausted faithful options?

God’s leading will never contradict His Word. He does not guide us into disobedience through hardship.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you ever confused hardship with God’s direction?
  • What distinguishes perseverance from presumption?
  • Where might God be calling you to remain faithful despite resistance?
