Ministry Ideas | Raising Up Laborers

Ministry Ideas | Raising Up Laborers

One of the greatest desires we have as missionaries is to see young people surrender their lives to serve in ministry. But how can we address this in a way that’s both intentional and consistent? How can we strategically introduce the idea of global missions and ministry surrender so that it's not just a one-time emotional moment, but part of a continual process of spiritual growth?

The Role of the Local Church

First and foremost, the local church is the primary place where young people are shaped spiritually. Through consistent preaching, particularly expository preaching through books of the Bible, themes related to the Great Commission will naturally emerge. Books like Acts and various Pauline epistles bring missionary work and gospel urgency to the forefront. However, these themes often arise organically rather than systematically, so they may not receive the focus they deserve on a regular basis.

In our own context, we’ve made it a practice to alternate between expository series and thematic series. Week after week, we aim to faithfully feed the flock, helping our church members understand their identity in Christ, grow in sanctification, and serve faithfully in the local church.

Going Beyond the Weekly Services

While spiritual maturity and service begin in the church, we’ve found that supplementing our regular teaching with targeted events throughout the year can make a significant difference. These events allow us to zoom in on the topic of missions and boldly challenge young people to consider their role in reaching the world.

Some of the events we’ve scheduled annually include:

  • Teen Camp

  • Multiply Conference

  • Winter Youth Conference

  • Graduation Conference

  • Combined Teen Rallies

These gatherings bring together young people from different churches—especially those we’ve helped plant—creating a unique opportunity for fellowship, discipleship, and focused spiritual challenge.

Being Bold with the Call

During these conferences and rallies, the message is clear and unapologetic: The world needs the gospel. God is calling laborers. Will you go? We challenge students to surrender their lives, to be open to God’s call, and to take the next steps toward ministry or missions. These bold moments serve as spiritual catalysts that complement the steady growth they experience in their local churches.

A Strategic Partnership

What we’re aiming for is a rhythm—an intentional partnership between the consistent discipleship that happens week in and week out, and the high-impact moments of decision and calling that take place during special events. We’re praying and laboring with purpose, trusting God to raise up more workers for His harvest field.

As we invest in the next generation, let’s not just hope that God calls them. Let’s create the environments where He often does.

"The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest..." — Matthew 9:37-38
