The 5 P’s of Teaching (Part 1):
I am sure I read or heard this idea (or at least the outline) from somewhere, but I honestly do not remember the source. I have adapted the idea for myself and added to it. I hope it will serve you, or at least spark a few ideas you can use.
- Preparation
A good teacher should not “shoot from the hip.” Certainly thoughts from your preparation will come to mind as you’re teaching, and they are useful to share. But remember they come from your time of preparation. If there is no root in preparation, there will be no fruit in the presentation. A good teacher prepares!
Not only should a teacher prepare the material, but should prepare their own life and heart as well. The students or hearers deserve a prepared teacher. Leave your worries, struggles, and issues outside of the classroom. Walking into the classroom when depressed, angry, or aggravated is harm to you as the teacher as well as the students you’re teaching.
Question to Consider: Have you ensured that you and your material is ready for the opportunity provided by God?
- Purpose
The purpose must be deeper than the fact the class is required. The teacher has a God-given opportunity to invest a specific amount of time into these specific students. The purpose goes beyond the material; it is to teach, help, and contribute to another person’s life. Be purposed to offer your heart, ears, effort, and time to your pupils. Pray for your students, and purpose to improve the lives of others through your teaching.
Question to Consider: Do you clearly understand the purpose and reasons behind your teaching?
