The 5 P’s of Teaching (Part 2):
If there’s no heart and zeal in the preparation, there certainly can be no expectations in the presentation. If you are not convinced about your subject, you will not be able to convince those listening to you. Imparting information in a boring manner should be a crime. Present yourself and your subject in a manner that will provoke interest and desire in your students.
Question to Consider: Have you prepared thoroughly enough to deliver your presentation with enthusiasm, passion, and confidence?
4. PracticeFirst, you as the teacher must practice what you teach/preach. To teach against your own lifestyle is a ugly misuse of your position. If you cannot or will not live out what you teach, then resign and save yourself as well as your hearers.
Lastly, what can you do to help your students use and apply what they learn? How can your lessons be put into life practice? Though there is a need for theory, the majority of your teaching should have current tangible application. The application may be discipline, attitude, or effort, but be clear and specific about how to apply what has been taught.
Question to Consider: Do your actions contradict or reinforce what you teach or preach?
5. Performance AssessmentA teacher must verify the students are learning. This can be accomplished through quizzes, tests, assignments, or various evaluations. The assessments are for the teacher, the students, and the institution as a whole.
It is good for the teacher to have a performance assessment as well. Whether the students give a survey or another teacher visits to evaluate, the teacher should strive to improve. Reading books and taking classes are great growing tools to help a teacher improve. And a growing teacher is a stronger teacher.
Question to Consider: In what ways are you actively working to improve your skills and become the most effective teacher for your students?
