Why Do Right?

Why Do Right?

“So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.” — Psalm 58:11

This Psalm is a prayer by David asking God to punish the wicked. Throughout much of his life, David faced mistreatment and injustice from Saul, Absalom, and others. He prayed for liberation, assistance, and retribution for the wicked. I find it intriguing how he concludes the chapter, reflecting his way of life. The conclusion is twofold:

  1. God will reward. At times, doing the right thing might feel like throwing rocks into a massive hole, making you wonder if it even matters. The ungodly appear to be thriving, so why bother doing what’s right? You might feel tempted to lash out, yell, and react impulsively. However, the promise is that ‘God will reward the righteous.’ Don’t stop doing what’s right. Don’t grow weary in doing what’s correct (2 Thessalonians 3:13; Galatians 6:9; Hebrews 12:3). Your efforts for the Lord are not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). God will not ‘forget your work and labor of love’ (Hebrews 6:10). There is a reward!

  1. God will judge. Even if it seems like wrongdoing is overlooked, God sees everything and will make a judgment. You don’t need to correct everyone, seek justice, or worry about these issues; God will handle them. It might not occur on your timeline, but God is faithful to His Word and will judge.

Why should you do the right thing when others don’t? Why live with integrity when it feels like it doesn’t matter? Why keep going when you’re exhausted and it seems like no one notices or cares? The reason is simple: God sees everything. He both rewards and judges. He knows exactly what He’s doing, and your efforts for Him are what truly count.
